Wake (Watersong #1)

Reviewer: Kelsey
Author: Amanda Hocking
Format: Hardcover
Pages: 309
Rating: 5 out of 10

Summary (thanks Goodreads): Gorgeous. Fearless. Dangerous. They're the kind of girls you envy; the kind of girls you want to hate. Strangers in town for the summer, Penn, Lexi and Thea have caught everyone's attention—but it’s Gemma who’s attracted theirs. She’s the one they’ve chosen to be part of their group.

Gemma seems to have it all—she’s carefree, pretty, and falling in love with Alex, the boy next door. He’s always been just a friend, but this summer they've taken their relationship to the next level, and now there’s no going back. Then one night, Gemma’s ordinary life changes forever. She’s taking a late night swim under the stars when she finds Penn, Lexi and Thea partying on the cove. They invite her to join them, and the next morning she wakes up on the beach feeling groggy and sick, knowing something is different.

Suddenly Gemma is stronger, faster, and more beautiful than ever. But her new powers come with a terrifying price. And as she uncovers the truth, she’s is forced to choose between staying with those she loves—or entering a new world brimming with dark hungers and unimaginable secrets.

My Thoughts: I really love Amanda Hocking. I do, I swear it! Her other series was outstanding. This one, however, didn't really strike me in the right way.

First, I felt that nothing happened until the end. I mean, something happened but I didn't feel like it was worth a whole book. Someone might say that I just got lost in the story and lot track of the pages but no. It was dragging. I didn't like that.

Second, I'm not sure it's necessary for this to be a trilogy. There better be something extraordinary in the second one to keep it going.

Third, why wasn't Daniel affected by the song Lexi sung? He was the only one and there wasn't even a hint at explanation.

I didn't like that this book couldn't stand alone. I know that when an author writes a book for a trilogy  it's assumed that you will read the next two but why can't the first one be semi-stand alone. I believe that this could still have ended the same way but also have wrapped up the story a little bit better.

In Conclusion: This book was not my thing at all. I wouldn't judge Amanda Hocking's other works because of this one; the others are better. I'm not sure if I will buy the next book in this series and if I do, it'll be in the hopes of changing my mind about this book. Unless you are desperately in love with mermaids (sirens really), swimming, people finding dead bodies, or unanswered questions, I wouldn't recommend this novel to you. If you like these things...have at it!

  1. Ha! Just the snippet of this on my blogroll and I've reviewed Wake today too. So glad to find that I'm not the only one who felt this way :)
Great review, Kelsey, there was so much more book than there was story.
