Review: The Assassin's Blade by Sarah J. Maas

Reviewer: Kayla
Author: Sarah J. Maas
Pages: 448
Format: Hardcover
My Rating: /10

Summary (thanks Goodreads):
Contains all five novellas.

Celaena Sardothien is Adarlan's most feared assassin. As part of the Assassin's Guild, her allegiance is to her master, Arobynn Hamel, yet Celaena listens to no one and trusts only her fellow killer-for-hire, Sam. In these action-packed novellas - together in one edition for the first time - Celaena embarks on five daring missions. They take her from remote islands to hostile deserts, where she fights to liberate slaves and seeks to avenge the tyrannous. But she is acting against Arobynn's orders and could suffer an unimaginable punishment for such treachery. Will Celaena ever be truly free? Explore the dark underworld of this kick-ass heroine to find out.

My Thoughts:
It's just as heartbreaking as you think it is.
Celaena and Sam both deserved SO MUCH BETTER.
I loved the stories and the writing and the background information we got on both Celaena and Sam and the developments in their relationship and it was all so beautifully done. These novellas made up a story in itself and it could have stood alone as one book, which I loved. You needed the one previous to understand the entirety of it and each one is important in its own way in shaping the Throne of Glass series as a whole, as well as explaining Celaena and why she is the way she is.

Okay, this book contained five novellas, and I will review each of them briefly.

The Assassin and the Pirate Lord
this one was excellent. you get the first glimpse of the dynamic between celaena and sam, from being rivals to friends, and the way their banter play off each other is so cute you're rooting for them from the beginning. you also get a glimpse of arobynn and his character, and how completely corrupt and vile he is. we get more of that later on in the last novella, and i am utterly disgusted. seeing cleaner's life prior to the salt mines was so interesting, and you can see that even her status as an assassin does not mean her morals are in the wrong place. she fights for what she knows is right, and goes against everyone's warnings and just does what she wants and it's badass af

The Assassin and the Healer
all the novellas happen in succession, one right after the other, and it makes it's own story, which i thought was really interesting. personally, i thought this novella was unnecessary, as it's premise didn't contribute much to the other novellas or the main story of the throne of glass series. even though, it was still nice to see celaena and what her natural instincts are, and how good she is despite her being a lethal killer. such dynamic.

The Assassin and the Desert
this novella had so many plot twists i was quite tense the entire time, especially near the end. we get introduced to so many characters that end up breaking your heart in various ways, as well as characters that you fall in love with even though they barely speak. that's all i'm going to say about that one.

The Assassin and the Underworld
this one was extremely action packed and we're reunited with SAM and you can literally see celaena falling in love with him and SAM and then so many things happen that i personally was not expecting and, again, so many plot twists and then you start questioning EVERY SINGLE PERSON but never SAM because SAM is the best and i cannot reiterate this enough SAM

The Assassin and the Empire
okay. i had to emotionally prepare myself for this one because i knew what was going to happen and if you've read throne of glass you know who SAM is and what happened to him and i was not ready to come to terms with that and i thought hm maybe if i don't finish it, the thing won't happen. yeah well I FINISHED IT AND THE THING HAPPENED AND I CRIED SO HARD and then they were really cute and i fell over in agony because of cuteness and then OTHER THINGS HAPPENED and then SO MANY SADS AT THE END and it was so emotional and then you realize jUST HOW VILE AROBYNN IS AND WOW I WANT HIS HEAD. i'm so distraught and i feel so bad for celaena literally bOTH HER AND SAM DESERVED SO MUCH BETTER. LIKE. I CAN'T. IT'S NOT FAIR. IM VERY UPSET.

Final Thoughts:
These novellas were incredible and DEFINITELY a must read if you're a fan of the series. I JUST LOVE THESE BOOKS SO MUCH

  1. Gah! I LOVED TAB SO MUCH^^ I already was a huge fan of ToG but then I read this one and it took all the feels to a whole other level. I felt so much for Celaena and poor Sam, I couldn't stand myself by the end! And Arobynn had me fuming, I can't wait to see when he'll pop up again in the series and for Celaena to give him a taste of her fury XD The last novella there had me bawling too, even though we KNEW how things were going to end up it was heartbreaking all the same. Gorgeous review! x
